Field Hall is delighted to present the celebrated Bruce Phares, Tim Lerch, & Alexey Nikolaev Jazz Trio. This is Bruce’s second time performing at Field Hall, the first was as Bassist for Diane Schuur at Grand Opening!
Bruce Phares, Bass
Alexey Nikolaev, Sax
Tim Lerch, Guitar
These three consummate jazz masters of guitar, sax, and acoustic bass join in musical conversation, exploring well-known and lesser-known jazz classics. Each a heralded virtuoso of the idiom, in trio settings these three close friends present an elevated, yet broadly accessible, musical experience to every audience they perform for.
BRUCE PHARES
Veteran jazz bassist Bruce Phares’ lyrical and melodic approach to bass playing has landed him appearances with many national and international artists such as jazz greats George Cables, Sir Roland Hannah, Frank Wess, Mark Murphy, Stanley Cowell, Charlie Byrd, Larry Coryell, Bruce Forman, etc. as well as NW region legends such as Ernestine Anderson, Jabo Ward, Floyd Standifer, Eddie Creed, Bob Nixon, Woody Woodhouse, to name a few. After stepping away from performing for a decade, since returning to performing in the last 10 years, Phares has focused on leading various groupings, rejoining with old friends legendary pianist Overton Berry, John Stowell, Diane Schuur, Jay Thomas, and John Bishop in his “Reunion Quartet” performances, as well as leading other groupings with various NW luminaries such as Marc Seales, Randy Halberstadt, Bill Anschell, Tim Lerch, Marina Albero, Hans Teuber, Jeremy Bacon, Alexy Nikolaev, Brian Monroney, etc. Phares heads up a duet & trio concert series on Vashon Island, “The Jam In The Atrium”, playing to packed audiences at The Vashon Center For The Arts atrium (The Jam in the Atrium with Bruce Phares!).
TIM LERCH
Guitar guru and world-famous educator of jazz guitar, Tim Lerch is one of the busiest and most sought-after guitarists in the Pacific Northwest. His playing style is greatly admired by guitarists around the planet, and his online following of over 90,000 of jazz guitar devotees can attest to his passion for sharing the wonderful aspects of finger-style blues and jazz. This month’s international magazine “Jazz Guitar Now” features yet another interview with him, explaining approaches to improve guitarists’ skills.
Tim not only performs under his own name with various NW luminaries, but he also holds the soloist’s chair with the ever-popular Gypsy Jazz group “Pearl Django”. His books and web-based teaching methods are revered. He has studied with Ted Greene, Joe Diorio, Lenny Breau, and Joe Pass and has shared the stage and/or recorded with Chuck Berry, Del Shannon, Brenda Lee, Duke Robillard, John Popper, and the Coasters, among many others, and has recorded for Motown and various television spots. https://www.timlerch.com/
ALEXEY NIKOLAEV
Since arriving in the Northwest in 2000, saxophonist Alexey Nikolaev has established a revered reputation of impeccable and consummate reed mastery, with bold and aggressive sound, capable of fiery trajectories as well as soulful emotion. In constant demand, performing in myriad top-echelon ensembles on a weekly basis around the region, Alexey stands at the forefront of sax playing here in the Seattle area. A close friend and collaborator with Phares, performing in numerous variations of groups with Bruce, Nikolaev brings blistering technique as well as sensitive ballad abilities to his artistry.
