Nestled in Hansville in the North part of North Kitsap is the quiet and protected Foulweather Bluff Nature Preserve.
I first “discovered” the wonderful little trail to this nature preserve with my daughter’s preschool group, which now seems like a lifetime ago.
It’s a favorite place to go with kids because of the short, easy hike combined with the fun of looking in tidepools at low tide. But it’s also a favorite area for birdwatching — I’ve frequently seen hawks and bald eagles during visits (but never when I have brought my long camera lens, of course). And it offers a quiet spot to take a quick get away from it all.
On second thought, DON’T go there. The times I have gone during the pandemic have been lovely, socially isolated respites. I want it all to myself!
Bring your kids, but don’t bring your dogs. These 3800 feet of beach, along with additional forest and marsh areas are a protected nature sanctuary managed by the Nature Conservancy. So it’s not open for camping, beach fires, and the like.
Where is the Foulweather Bluff nature Preserve Trailhead?
You’ll find the trailhead off Twin Spits Road in Hansville. The trailmarker is not easily seen from the road, so you’ll need to look for the pullout — and other cars at busier times are a sign you’ve reached the right spot.
