Seattle Seafair started in 1950 and grew (like everything in Seattle) into the 10 week festival we know today. Seafair features parades, pirates, races, milk carton boat races, real boat races (hydroplanes), clowns, arts events, and more. My own personal childhood memories of Seafair including having my ponytails threatened by pirates' machetes, watching the fireworks at Greenlake (yes, they were at Greenlake not at Gasworks Park), trying to save cartons for my own milk carton boat but borrowing someone else's simple entry after the competition was over, and candy-grabbing at the Greenwood (and downtown) parades. I am not old enough, however, to have attended the aqua follies or, sadly, see Led Zeppelin when they played at the Aqua Theater. And, as an aside, I see someone wrote a romance novel set at the Aqua Theater in 1955. I'll need to add that to my reading list. (Yes, it's an affiliate link which means if you click it and purchase the book I get a small commission that helps support this site but, not, I have not read the book but I intend to as I enjoy reading books set in Seattle).
