Mount Rainier is the highest peak in Washington State and an active (though fortunately not eruptive) volcano. It's a very prominent landscape feature from many places in Western Washington.

Please do NOT use this marker for GPS locations! It's just noting the location of the mountain itself, and the surrounding Mount Rainier National Park has five different entrance locations. For more information about that visit this page on the NPS website.

It's a train contraption for kids that is pulled behind a tractor and painted with cow spots.), and apple canyon, rubber duck races, "Human Football," axe throwing and, of course, farm animals.

The polylines on the map here are very imprecise. The area from west to east is approximately the right length to give you a feel for the area of the Columbia River that is covered by the Columbia River Natural Area, but the area North and South of the river does not represent the actual borders of the natural area. Seattle Waterfront

We've put the "Seattle Waterfront" under the "neighborhoods" category here as we're not sure where else to put it.

We think of it more as an area or historic district.

The area has about 20 piers with shops, restaurants, and things to do.

Some of our many suggestions -- we don't dine there often anymore but spent enough time there growing up:

  • Go on the Seattle Great Wheel

  • Visit the Seattle Aquarium

  • Rent a bike

  • If you like oddities, visit the Old Curiosity Shop. This is now in a different location than when I was growing up, but it still has its mummies and other weird stuff.

  • Get fish and chips at Ivars

MoPop

Seattle's Museum of Pop Culture, now known as "MoPop," presents exhibitions on many aspects of pop culture, including animation, popular music, television, movies. Exhibits may vary.

It was built in 2000 and was initially founded by Paul Allen as the "Experience Music Project," no doubt in homage to Seattle's Jimi Hendrix. EMP eventually became MoPop and widened its focus to encompass more popular culture.

Architect Frank Gehry designed the structure with the intention of making it express "rock and roll" kind of like a guitar. {[{Personally, when it first went in, I thought it looked like a larger and more colorful version of the Queen Anne blob, which no longer exists. But it's grown on me.}]}

Valhöll Brewing Poulsbo is one of the city's many small craft breweries. They feature a very nice small seating area.

It's easy to notice this one. The building may be a bit nondescript but you'll notice the huge Viking logo on the front.

I'm not a beer drinker, but my spouse reassures me that their beer is very good.

Echoes Brewing

Echoes Brewing Poulsbo was formerly Sound Brewery. For a while, Sound Brewery opened a restaurant in a different location, then closed, now Echoes is brewing at its former spot.

If you're visiting in Summer, you'll find a nice, outdoor, seating area -- covered, actually, in case it's not so nice.

It's not right on the main drag in "downtown" Poulsbo -- but nothing in town is too far away. In fact, there are a couple of annual pub runs to all the breweries. You could do your own!

Burrata Bistro and Paella Bar

If I had to recommend places to eat to someone visiting Poulsbo, the Burrata Bistro Poulsbo would be at the top of my list. It's too bad that my photos do not do it justice! The exterior is, at the time of this listing, under renovation, my only photo (of the bar) is blurry due to low light and during an outdoor get-together there, someone did not want me taking food photos! And the food is lovely.

Indoor, we've gone to the bar for tapas and drinks - but I didn't realize how many wonderful options the menu has until we had a large outdoor dinner there last summer. The food was superb.

Viking Ice Cream

You might not even be aware of Viking Ice Cream Poulsbo. It's "Forge" is located in a strip mall off Viking way. Visitors are more likely to buy ice cream at Island Cool when they visit town due to the location.

But you may have encountered it if you:

  1. Live here

  2. Have gone to VikingFest (and as aside, I seem to recall the ice cream being called Viking FEAST and note that this has changed. Or was that my imagination?)

  3. Have shopped in a few of the local retailers that carry it (Red Apple grocery next door to the "Forge" does).

So if you want some authentic Poulsbo ice cream, I recommend it. My favorite is the pumpkin, which you can only get seasonally.

If you visit the Forge, they are open odd hours, generally around 11:00 but check the door as the sign may make it look like they're not open.

Poulsbo Sons of Norway

Poulsbo is sometimes called "Little Norway" so, of course, there's an very active Poulsbo Sons of Norway.

They regularly have events like lunches, Julefest, Viking bonfires, Norwegian dancing classes, and (of course) Lutefisk dinners. They also have a "Trolls Den" bar for members.

If we have any of their events on our website, they'd be here. Better yet, check their website for what's going on currently.

JJ's Fish House

JJ's Fish House Poulsbo has been right there on the parking lot by the Poulsbo waterfront for a long time.  They claim the best fish and chips in Poulsbo. But do they?

I'd say yes! I enjoy their fish and chips, though I haven't been there recently -- and that's not because it wasn't good, just because I don't go out for fish and chips much. However, my husband's opinion is that they're OK but you should eat them in the restaurant as he thinks they don't transport well.

But it's not all fish and chips, they offer other seafood -- and food -- as well.

The restaurant had closed recently, which was sad to see after 26 years in Poulsbo, but new owners purchased it and it reopened in May 2023. The new owners have done some remodeling on the inside and the food may be a bit different now -- I think it's time for me to take another visit!

One thing I like about going to JJ's in the warmer months is that they have an outside sitting area -- limited, so you're lucky to get a table -- but I like to have a drink and watch the cars coming and going from the parking lot, and people passing by.

Regarding the "no pet" rule checked off here, I HAVE seen people with dogs at the outdoor seating area and, of course, service animals are always allowed.

Poulsbo Candy Shoppe

The Poulsbo Candy Shoppe filled a need for fudge and vintage-type candy in Poulsbo, much to the chagrin of local dentists and parents (just kidding).

They have great selection of fudge as well as candy -- both current-day candy and I've found a few harder-to-find items there that recall the candy of my childhood. They also had an awesome Tootsie Pop Owl t-shirt that was mostly sold out after Viking Fest last year.

They're generally open 11-5 and are closed on Mondays.

SEA Discovery Center (and Octopus Statue)

The SEA Discovery Center Poulsbo is run by Western Washington University Extension. It's generally open from 11AM- 4PM on Friday and Saturday and admission is by donation.

It's a place for kids to view marine life, with some hands-on activities, too.

In front, you'll find a large Octopus sculpture, which was introduced in 2013. This 7' sculpture is by artist Mark Gale, who also is responsibe for the 12' Poulsbo Norseman statue that stands at Viking Way.

Mama's Armenian Kitchen

Mama's Armenian Kitchen Poulsbo is only open on Saturdays -- from 7AM - 2PM at the time we're listing this. Get there early -- you'll usually find a wait. On sunny Summer days, I've sometimes seen the wait going down the stairs onto the sidewalk. But the wait is worth it! I've not sampled everything there - they served baked goods both sweet and savory -- I can attest that that pear galette and baklava are wonderful -- but the potato hand pie seemed to be very popular and the cinnamon rolls were already sold out by 7:30AM. Also try the turkish coffee -- you'll need to wait a bit for it, but worth it if you're a coffee afficianado!

The bakery is located upstairs from Cafe Cocina -- you'll find the stairs around the corner.

Olympic Outdoor Center Kayak Rentals

Liberty Bay in Poulsbo is a great place to Kayak. If you don't have your own, you can rent from Olympic Outdoor Center Kayak rentals seasonally. They generally open in May and close at the end of Summer.

During Summer months, they're generally open from 10--6 during the week and 10-8 Friday and Saturday.

In the Summer, in particular, if you're kayaking watch for harbor seals near the marina -- there are often babies in July. You are supposed to keep your distance from them -- I can't promise they'll keep their distance from you. I had one follow me and continue in a pattern of swimming under my boat and then popping up in front of it early one morning years ago (wish I'd had a camera on the front of the boat).

If you're confident in kayaking, kayak down to Keyport, grab a sandwich and then kayak back.

King Olaf Statue

Look for the Viking King Olaf Statue in Poulsbo when you're visiting Waterfront Park. He stands in the lawn near the Poulsbo Sons of Norway.

The statue dates from 1975 after a visit to Poulsbo from King Olav V of Norway.

He's small -- not huge like the 12' tall Poulsbo Norseman that came later, but likely more historically accurate.

Poulsbo Norseman Statue

The impressive Poulsbo Norseman Statue (sometimes called the Poulsbo Viking Statue) is by artist Mark Gale and was unveiled in November of 2012.

The statue sits on the corner of Viking and Lindvig Way -- a bit outside the part of Front Street that most visitors venture down, so you might need to go look for it -- but easy to spot when you're there as it is 12 feet tall and weighs almost 6000lbs!

The Norseman often gets dressed up for various holidays and local events, sometimes having sported sombreros, bunny ears, race bibs, aprons, or giant beer tankards.

I've heard mixed opinions about the statue -- we love it, but there were initally some complaints about the historical inaccuracy of horned helmets and I've met people who think it's "disrespectful" to dress a "proud viking" up in Easter bunny ears.

Muriel Iverson Williams Poulsbo Waterfront Park and Kvelstad Pavilion

On Poulsbo's waterfront is a lovely park with lawn, walking paths and a large gazebo with some seating surrounding it. You'll find plenty of benches to sit and look out at the marina.

The park's namesake, Muriel Iverson Williams, was the town's second mayor.

While you're in the park, look for the small statue of Viking King Olaf near the Sons of Norway, and the Guardian Stone statue (swords in the stone!) And be sure to take a walk down the nearby boardwalk which will take you to some trails into American Legion Park.

If you're a birder, you'll find many marine birds and some other varieties. I've noted many great blue herons, several varieties of duck, occasionally I've spotted a belted Kingfisher -- though I think I recall that being closer down near the Fish Park bridge. Canada geese, of course, and many gulls. You also might spy a bald eagle or osprey but at this location they're usually farther overhead.

Sluy's Bakery

If there's one thing visitors to Poulsbo seem to like to do, it's to get something at Sluy's Bakery Poulsbo.

It's where Poulsbo Bread originated -- but visitors are more likely to purchase sweet treats.

Our recommendation? Things vary from time to time, but we think you should try the Viking Cup, which is essentially a cinnamon roll with a bunch of cream cheese frosting. The dough boys were popular with my kids, and you can usually find some smiley or frownie face cookies -- get one based on your mood for the day!

Beware, though, because on sunny days with lots of traffic a line sometimes forms down the block.

Sluy's is generally open from 5AM - 6PM daily. Get there early for less traffic and best selection!

Poulsbohemian Coffeehouse

The Poulsbohemian Coffeehouse is a favorite go-to place for coffee in Poulsbo. While you can grab a to-go cup, I'd recommend, if it's not too busy, getting your coffee in a ceramic cup and staying.

My favorite spot (don't take it) is the comfy chair at the back where I used to plant myself on a quiet morning to work on some writing tasks while being able to gaze out at Liberty Bay.

You'll also find some outdoor chairs and tables in front -- great if you're there with your dog -- and a couple of Adirondack-style chairs at the side of the building where you can sit and gaze out at the bay if weather permits.

Like most coffee shops, the Poulsbohemian Coffeehouse features varying artwork by local artists on its walls. And, like most coffee houses, wi-fi is available so you can grab a table and work on your tasks, if you want. But, of course, it's also great place to sit and chat, or sit and be quiet if that's your style (like me).

The Poulsbohemian Coffee House opened in 1993 and is owned by Marianna Mears according to this 1997 Kitsap Sun article.

Prior to the pandemic, they used to have many "armchair poetry" readings but, unfortunately, those haven't resumed since at the time of this writing.

We'll add some photos here soon enough -- we walk there ALL the time so it's funny that we don't actually have photos of the area on our website right now.

Tulip Town

Tulip Farm in Mount Vernon, WA. One of the main sites for the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

Features a tractor ride around the fields (really, a small enough area to be easily walkable), food with outdoor seating, gift store and tulip purchases.

Tulip Town also has a package for photographers who want to photograph the fields during the "golden hours" at sunrise or sunset.

Photography allowed; no drones.

Roozengaarde

Roozengaarde is one of the two main sites for the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. It features fields full of tulips as well as tulip sales (but you'll need to wait for Autumn to order bulbs to plant for next year).

Do not miss their display garden; I enjoyed it more than the tulip fields and it features some exquisite varieties of tulips.

Per their website, entry is by timed tickets and times cannot be changed. However, I witnessed them selling tickets at the door.

Smith Island

Small island is about five miles off the west coast of Whidbey Island. Smith Island is a protected aquatic reserve. boats must keep a certain distance from shore to protect the wildlife there.

Notable species found here are tufted puffins, rhinocerous auklets, rockfish and bull kelp. But you might also see harbor seals and sea lions on shore, cormorants, and glaucous wing gulls.

Protection Island

Protection Island -- as its name implies -- is a protected aquatic reserve meaning that it has limited human traffic (I did note a hut on a bluff there with a bunch of people who I assume were volunteers or researchers) and boats must keep a certain distance from shore.

Some notable species you might find there are rhinoceros auklets, pigeon guillemots, tufted puffins, and glaucous-winged gulls.

And, of course, you might note some harbor seals on the shore.

Dosewallips State Park North Tidal Area Trail Observation Platform

This platform, and the area surrounding it (as well as the general area including the nearby campground) are common places to view elk.

The image of the two bull elk, here, were taken while standing on this observation platform. One thing to note, though, is that if you're using a tripod and someone is walking around on the platform, there will be some vibrations.

Big Beef Creek in Seabeck, WA is a popular place to view bald eagles in May and June in particular. It's best to go in the morning at a very low tide, when the eagles come down to feed.

Trumpeter Swans in Sequim Near Port Williams

I viewed a large flock of trumpeter swans off of Port Williams Road in Sequim in January 2023. Be aware, however, that the area around here are largely private farms. I did find a pullout on the roadside to view the swans -- at a distance, but with seeing a large herd of elk as a bonus!
