Highlights A lovely B&B near Smoo Cave in Durness, Scotland.
Additional Location Writeup I'm writing this well after our trip around the North Coast 500. I loved Durness and, though there are so many places I would like to revisit, Durness is near the top. For one thing, to spend more time on its beaches but, primarily, to be able to go out to Faraid head and, hopefully, photograph some Puffins. Smoo Lodge was where we stayed on our pass through Durness, and, unfortunately, it was only for one night. The lodging was clean, and the hosts friendly. I don't recall the breakfast at this B&B, for some reason -- I'm sure it was good, but perhaps we just scooted back on the road. I believe that I reserved it because 1) it was available and 2) I was intrigued by Smoo Cave, which was nearby. However, this lodge dates back to 1790, so you're getting some history in there as well! And it has a side that faces the sea. If I had to stay again, I'd likely reserve something a bit closer to Balkaneil Beach (due to the birding and photography aspect), but I'd recommend this B&B to anyone.

Summary

Smoo Lodge is where we stayed when we were in Durness. We were only there for one night, but it was a great place to stay. A bit, as I recall, partway between town and Smoo Cave. I believe we had a standard room, and it was on the small side — but then again, we often stayed either between lower-price AirBNBs on this trip or…castles.

Pros

  • Friendly staff.
  • The breakfast was good, to my recollection. It’s been a while.

Cons

  • Not really any cons. I’d recommend it.

Smoo Lodge B&B

What a great hotel! The location is perfect, beautiful view over the sea. Very friendly owner with a warm and personal welcome at a late hour, tea with home made cake. The rooms are really tastefully decorated and the beds with their super duvets sleep great. The breakfast is very varied. Absolutely recommend this hotel and would like to come back again.
An excellent lodge, with excellent service and top quality breakfast. Absolutely lovely, clean and comfortable. Luxury bedding and bathrooms.
Our family had the pleasure of staying in two rooms for two nights in early July. We received a warm welcome and were treated so kindly by Merlin during our stay. Breakfast was incredible, rooms were comfortable and clean, location was perfect. Merlin even loaned us coins so I could do laundry across the road due to my luggage being lost by the airline and we didn’t have the currency needed. The kindness was so appreciated. These were the best accommodations we experienced on the NC 500.
We stayed in the Smoo room, the Deluxe room, and it was absolutely lovely. The bathroom was fantastically well equipped and high quality, the bed was extremely comfortable with high quality sheets, and the room was equipped with tea and nespresso.

Merlin was an absolutely fantastic host, waiting up late for us (due to some car troubles on our way up), and delayed breakfast to allow us a lie-in which was massively appreciated.

We will definitely be staying again if we visit Durness again, hopefully for longer than a night!
Absolutely lovely stay. Lovely welcoming hosts, who have renovated this traditional lodge in a wholly elegant and yet warm style, every detail beautifully realised. The bed was the most comfortable I had ever slept in. Food at breakfast was so good. I will definitely be returning for a longer visit.
