Summary

Overall, if I had the chance to go back and travel on my own in the area, I’d consider staying there. It looks clean, and it’s bike-friendly (they have bike storage), so for those cyclists touring the area (and I envy you!), this might be a place to stay if you want to go with less expense and aren’t camping.

Pros

  • Bike storage
  • Dog-friendly
  • Breakfast if you pre-book it.
  • Shared kitchen
  • Serves local beer and wine!

Cons

  • Well, it’s a hostel so if privacy is your “thing,” you might want to look for other accommodation.

Durness Smoo Youth Hostel

Great budget option in an otherwise expensive town. Ben was extremely friendly and accommodating. Secure dry bicycle storage is available too. Highly recommended for cycle tourists and those on a budget.
Great people, great place, great memories. Jan and Ben are so wonderful and kind. They helped me carry on to complete the NC500 and I will be forever grateful. Visit here for a relaxing stay in a beautiful location.
Very nice Hostel. The guest were very friendly and willing to chat, we even played a board game with a few guests.

The accommodation was very nice with thick duvets and comfortable beds. If you are staying in the summer blankets are also provided instead of using the duvet.

The staff member Ted was so nice and welcoming, couldn’t have asked for a better person to show us around and let us know the lay of the land. Ted even stayed past 10pm just to chat with guests including us.

Overall the hostel was very clean and would highly recommend for anyone doing the NC500 or even just visiting Durness.
Cracking area to explore but be aware this is a very basic hostel. Which is absolutely fine for me, I had a great sleep. Staff were not great (I know it's not 5 star and what to expect) however, after standing unacknowledged for long enough to make me feel awkward, a second member of staff pushed past me without acknowledgement or a quick hello. The chap that was behind me in reception made comment to me privately later on on how he felt it was completely unreasonable how I was spoken to.
For a youth hostel, it was great. All the expected amenities and then some. Spacious, well equipped kitchen... great lounge area... clean rooms & bathrooms. Staff only at premises until 9 30 in the evening so keep that in mind if you need anything.
