Locurio: An Escape Room in the Heart of Fremont

We visited Locurio, an escape room in the Fremont area of Seattle for our first-ever two-person escape room experience. Here's what we thought.

The first challenge was finding Locurio. We decided this was not intentional, though it was not our first experience with the challenge of actually finding an escape room.

Locurio is hidden in the heart of Fremont. Well, not so hidden. You’ll find signs on the street guiding you there as you get near. When we turned into the alley in which it’s located, we had some difficulty finding the door, and then getting someone to answer. 1

We finally found the door which if you turn off the street is located on the right side. Due to the nature of escape rooms, this is the only photo you’ll find in this brief post.

I wouldn’t have known about Locario except that my youngest daughter set it up for just the two of us. We’ve done plenty of escape rooms with family but, at times, this tends to end up with some bickering. She wanted some “mom time” and this is what she chose.

Would I recommend doing an escape room with two people? As I said, there was much less contentiousness than when we go as a family unit. But it was also more difficult with fewer brains to solve the puzzles.

Summary

Part of the challenge was finding the escape room location! Locurio was a fun escape room experience that I’d recommend, but its facilities are not accessible and one of the rooms was a bit too dark for me.

Pros

  • The puzzles were challenging! And, generally, well thought out.
  • The helper was not too intrusive and offered assist (mostly) when asked.
  • The escape room we did (the storybook themed one) offered enough of a challenge to make me want to go back — with more people next time — to see it through. It was a bit too challenging for two people to do.

Cons

  • At least for the escape room we did, one of the rooms was so dark that even with the provided lantern, it was a bit of a challenge for me. I felt like a little more light would have helped us slightly “older” people who need a bit of help with vision to get through it better.
  • The escape room was a bit of a challenge to find.
  • It is NOT accessible. The location is only accessible by stairs and not all of the rooms would accomodate a wheelchair, if you could get in there with one in the first place.
  • The price, at least for one of their escape rooms, is $300 — which isn’t to bad if you have a full team and divide it up but is pricey if you’re one of the brave few who want to try an escape room with just a couple of people. Some other escape rooms have per-person prices but it makes sense to price it per-room as two people or six take the same amount of time and space.

In writing a review of an escape room, I think that you have to talk in terms of setup, professionalism, challenge, and environment.

Locario is set up in an old building in Fremont. As I mentioned it’s off sort of an alleyway. In the main lobby, you’ll find a desk, some merch, and there’s a restroom. Use it before you start.

Inside the escape rooms, my daughter and I felt that it was a bit overly warm. As you don’t drink inside the room, prehydrate and have something ready when you come out.

The Storykeeper

We chose to do the “Storykeeper” escape room because of the book theme (of course).

It’s always difficult writing about an escape room as it has to be pretty spoiler-free. Escape rooms never allow you to bring your phone in and take photos — nor would you want me to disclose photos of an experience you might have. But it makes writing a review difficult.

As compared to other escape rooms that we’ve visited, this was about on par in terms of professional setup and was fairly challenging for two people. 2

The puzzle consisted of multiple rooms. A word of warning to us “older” folk and those with lower vision: this room had some elements that were pretty dark and made the room more challenging. But the puzzles were fun, my daughter, in particular, found some of the elements enchanting.

As far as helpful hints, the guide occasionally asked if we wanted hints before I felt I was ready — though being that we didn’t finish the room, perhaps we needed them. And there was another element during the experience that also gave unsolicited hints — which were quite necessary, I’ll admit!

Review Summary

In review, I’d give Locario about 4.5 out of 5 stars and would recommend it as an escape room to try.

Have you been to Locurio? What did you think?

Note: This was not sponsored. We visited there and paid for our own escape room experience because my daughter wanted to do it.

Footnotes

  1. He soon showed up, we were just within the arrival time recommendations. On the early side of them.[]
  2. Did I mention that we didn’t finish? It’s a sign that this was a pretty good escape room that I want to return so I can finish up.[]
